What is Zinc Flake Coating?

Zinc flake coating is a type of high-performance, non-electrolytic coating designed to protect metals, especially steel, from corrosion. Unlike traditional electroplated zinc coatings, which require an electrical current, zinc flake coating is applied in a mechanical or spray process that uses a mixture of zinc and aluminum flakes suspended in a binder. This mixture is typically applied as a liquid or paste and then cured in an oven to form a tightly adhered, protective layer.

Main Benefits of Zinc Flake Coating?

  • High Corrosion Resistance: Zinc flake coatings provide strong corrosion protection by creating a dense, interlocking layer of zinc and aluminium flakes. This layer is highly resistant to moisture, chemicals, and salt spray, making it ideal for parts that face extreme environmental conditions.
  • Thin Layer Protection: Unlike other coatings that require thicker layers, zinc flake can provide effective protection in a thin layer. This is beneficial where tight dimensional tolerances are necessary, as it avoids the need for excessive material build-up.
  • No Hydrogen Embrittlement: The application process for zinc flake is non-electrolytic, meaning hydrogen is not introduced into the metal, preventing hydrogen embrittlement. This makes it a go-to choice for high-strength steel components that cannot withstand the embrittlement risk of electroplating.

Main Limitations of Zinc Flake Coating

  • Heat Resistance: Zinc flake coatings generally provide less resistance to high temperatures than zinc-nickel coatings, making them less suitable for engine components or other areas subject to high heat.
  • Cost: Zinc flake coating can be more expensive than traditional zinc or zinc-nickel, as it often involves multiple coating layers and a specific curing process to achieve its high-performance standards.

  • Automotive: Commonly used for fasteners, brake components, and other parts exposed to high corrosion environments.
  • Construction: Structural bolts and other components in outdoor environments benefit from zinc flake's protective properties.
  • Heavy Equipment: Used on parts exposed to heavy wear and environmental exposure in machinery, such as mining or agricultural equipment.
